Source: Mork & Mindy

Speaker: Mork

Nanu nanu.

Context

This line is spoken by Mork, played by Robin Williams, in the TV show Mork & Mindy (1978-82).

In the 70s, Sunday and Monday were happy days. Tuesday and Wednesday were happy days. Thursday and Friday were happy days. And Happy Days, the hit Ron Howard sitcom, spun off a ton of shows to fill almost every day of week. Among these spin-offs were Joanie Loves Chachi, Laverne & Shirley, and the weirdest of the bunch, Mork & Mindy.

Mindy is a normal girl, but she is visited by Mork from the planet Ork, who arrives on Earth in a giant egg-shaped spacecraft in order to study human behavior. Mork's alien ways provide comic relief, and his alien language gave the world a brand new catchphrase, his alien greeting "Nanu nanu," accompanied by a Spock-like hand gesture.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this if someone is trying to communicate with an alien or paying paying tribute to Robin Williams.
