"Maybe Christmas, perhaps...means a little bit more!"
He puzzled and puzzled till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. Maybe Christmas, he thought...doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps...means a little bit more!
Context
This line is spoken by the narrator in the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas, written by Dr. Seuss (1957).
Dr. Seuss wasn't just an author, he was basically a philosopher. He thought America's idea of Christmas leaned a little too far to the commercial side, so this book was supposed to make readers think of the true meaning of the holiday—which, incidentally, isn't what you get under the tree.
In this scene, the Grinch thinks he's won; he's stolen all the Whos' presents and decorations—even their Christmas food! But here's the kicker: the Whos down in Whoville are having Christmas, presents or not. When the Grinch sees that, he has an epiphany. Maybe the holiday spirit really can conquer all.
Where you've heard it
If you hear someone called a Grinch during the Christmas season, it's due to this book. But you can participate in Grinch-mas to see if you too can grow your heart three sizes.

- You may have seen the popular movie adaptation from 2000, starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch.
- Apparently, there will be a 2018 movie adaptation with Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the Grinch.
- Plus, there is a musical.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
This is the best epiphany you can have, especially if you're broke this Christmas.
