Author: Isaiah

"Like a lamb to the slaughter"

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

Context

This line is written by Isaiah in Isaiah 53:7.

Isaiah is talking about the Messiah here and prophesying about how his life and death are gonna go down. Jesus will be oppressed all his life, rejected and afflicted, and then he will die innocently, like a lamb. Sounds like a pretty raw deal.

Where you've heard it

You might hear this one when someone is heading for disaster: "She walked into the exam like a lamb to the slaughter."

Also, Roald Dahl wrote a short story called "Lamb to the Slaughter" about a woman who murders her husband with a frozen leg of lamb. Who'da thunk mutton was so deadly?

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Not pretentious, though a tad macabre.
