Beauty is an enormous, unmerited gift given randomly, stupidly.
Context
This line is from the novel And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini (2013).
This one's coming at you from the third bestselling novel by Khaled Hosseini, a.k.a. that dude who wrote The Kite Runner. Again, Hosseini returns to a story split between his birthplace of Afghanistan and the West. This time, his structure is a little funkier, as each chapter is from a different character's perspective.
This particular quote comes from Markos Varvaris, a Greek doctor living in Kabul, and he speaks it in reference to a little Afghani girl whose face has been horribly disfigured by a dog. Usually, we'd try to end this with a joke, but… well, that's just sad.
Where you've heard it
If you know this quote, it's probably because you've read this book. This is not terribly unlikely since it was a bestseller—one you could even find at Wal-Mart. The book came out pretty recently, though, so it hasn't gotten too many shout-outs yet.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
Yeah, it definitely sounds a little high-falutin'. Still, it's not like you're quoting James Joyce or something.
